Sarah Palin Resigns
Sarah Palin pulled off the perfect PR low-balling move. She called a press conference this morning, to meet at her house late in the afternoon. A few reporters showed up and late-comers were held back by state troopers. She made a speech in which she demonized the evil forces that hound her and her family of innocent bystanders and then she quit. She didn’t give specifics – though there were references to adults making fun of her baby and her desire to save the state of Alaska hundreds of thousands of dollars spent on ethics investigations. She wouldn’t say what happens next, other than her intention to do good things “outside of government.” Private practice or coup d’etat, whatever!
The move is brilliant because so close to the close of business (the AP filed their story at 5:07 pm), it didn’t give anyone time to add this story to the 6 o’ clock news. There’s plenty of time to make the 11 o’ clock news, but without comment from anyone of importance because it is the late show on a Friday leading into the first major holiday of summer.
The newspapers have nothing but copies of the speech for Saturday; and unlikely to have anything of substance for Sunday. Jon Stewart is off on Fridays, SNL is on reruns. This story will essentially have to wait for Monday and they are hoping the even of Michael Jackson’s public viewing at the Staples Center takes the heat of it…
It is a brilliant move to deflect attention, but even as CompuServe waves bye-bye to the electronic world, there is this wonderful thing called the Internet and it is the wired people who will keep the story moving along. For the moment, I just wait patiently to see what the Big Announcement will be. The odd-makers will be all over this one.
Will she announce her presidential bid this early?
Will there be a sex-tape released? (complete with bear rug and hanging naked from antlers)
Is she having an affair?
Are there ethical charges coming down on her?
Is the middle kid pregnant and she doesn’t want to have to apologize to Letterman?
